"Define What The Product Will Do Before You Design How The Product Will Do It." — Alan Cooper
The Brief
A highly influential, world-leading supplier of high-end, large-carat polished diamonds, Venus Jewel wanted to revolutionize the way loose diamonds are presented at trade shows.
Loose diamonds face a significant disadvantage. Since they are not yet set into jewellery, they must be secured inside a small acrylic box. Their presence is further diminished by oversized technical signage that surrounds them, making the diamonds appear even more insignificant by comparison. Poor lighting only adds to the visual clutter. The result is an apologetic presentation of a highly prized and precious possession.
Approach
Our core goal was to allow the diamond to visibly wow and sparkle to the naked eye. Its natural beauty and brilliance had to take centre stage, while every other element of communication remained peripheral at best.
We began by challenging the assumption that diamonds could only be kept secure inside an acrylic box. By arriving at a practical alternative, we gained the freedom to think outside the box—quite literally.
Keeping in mind a rigorous set of criteria, including modularity, portability, feasibility and collapsibility, we arrived at a design solution that could adapt seamlessly across various trade show environments while doing justice to every solitaire.
The final solution was evaluated against 9 design criteria, evolved through 5 iterations and culminated in 5 distinct configurations.
The Impact
An unbelievable—and previously unachieved—feat in the loose diamond industry: every solitaire was allowed to shine, sparkle, command attention and captivate its audience.
In Gujarati, diamonds are called 'હીરો' (Heero). For Venus Jewel, we simply let their હીરો be the Hero.
